We are committed taking a sustainable approach to managing future growth at Sydney Airport. You can read more about our approach to sustainability here.
Section 3.2 of the Airport Environment Strategy 2019-2024 sets out our key objectives in relation to sustainability and environmental management, and the five-year action plan sets out how these will be achieved.
Our objectives are:
- to ensure appropriate management systems and plans are in place to satisfactorily address all environmental risks affiliated with airport operations
- to establish and maintain appropriate mechanisms for effective internal and external communication of environmental matters
- to engage with and support our local community by contributing to the environment in which they live
- to develop and operate the airport in a sustainable manner
Engaging with the local community on environmental protection and management
Partnering with Bayside Council
Approximately 94% of the airport sits within the Bayside local government area. Sydney Airport has committed to invest $12m through to 2029 to establish the Community and Environmental Projects Reserve Fund.
Cooks River Catchment Coastal Management Program
The Cooks River Catchment Coastal Management Program (CMP) sets the long-term strategy for the holistic and coordinated management of the catchment under the NSW Coastal Management Framework.
Sydney Airport is a member of the CMP’s Steering Group. Through this group, we engage with local government and stakeholders in relation to climate adaptation and boundary protection from climate change impacts such as sea level rise. We are also members of the CMP’s Biodiversity Working Group which brings together key stakeholders and asset owners from across the catchment to shape the delivery of biodiversity-related studies for the CMP.
Conservation Volunteers Australia
We are focused on promoting sustainability in our local environment. Complementing our five year environment strategy, we support Conservation Volunteers Australia to rehabilitate bushland and coastal areas in our local national parks and beaches.
Section 3.3.5 of the AES details our five-year sustainability and environmental management action plan.
